To master any complex field, one must first build a foundation. For example, to understand advanced scientific theories, one must first be proficient in basic principles. Similarly, spiritual growth requires mental preparation and sincerity.

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains the prerequisite for understanding the deep spiritual truths of the Gita and Dnyaneshwari.

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar provides a profound analogy for a person of steady wisdom. The ocean is naturally full and self-contained. Even when numerous rivers pour their voluminous waters into it, especially during the monsoon, the ocean neither overflows its boundaries nor shows a visible increase in its vastness. Similarly, a wise person remains internally undisturbed even when sensory desires or external circumstances approach them. They are so deeply anchored in their own self-realization that external additions or subtractions do not alter their inner state of absolute peace.

Maintain inner stability regardless of external gains or losses. For example, if you receive a major promotion, stay humble and grounded; if you face a setback, stay calm and composed like the ocean.

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains the stability of a realized soul (Sthitaprajna) using the metaphor of an ocean that remains undisturbed despite the influx of rivers.

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar emphasizes the transcendental nature of the Self (Atman). He describes it as 'ādimadhyarahita', meaning it lacks a beginning and a middle, implying it is eternal and beyond the constraints of time. It is 'svayēṃ siddha' (self-proven), requiring no external validation or cause for its existence. Because it is 'apārita' (infinite), it defies all human attempts at quantification or measurement. This highlights that the soul is beyond the reach of the physical senses and the logical mind, existing as a pure, boundless consciousness.

When facing limitations or feeling small, remember that your true essence (the soul) is infinite and cannot be measured by worldly standards of success or failure. For example, a single failure doesn't define you because your potential is boundless.
