Dnyaneshwari Ch. 4, Verse 99

न मां कर्माणि लिम्पन्ति न मे कर्मफले स्पृहा । इति मां योऽभिजानाति कर्मभिर्न स बध्यते ॥

तरी कर्मे आपणियांतें । न लिंपतीचि पैं मातें । हें जाणती जे मातें । तेही न लिंपती ॥

"Actions do not taint Me, nor do I have a desire for the fruits of action. One who knows Me thus is not bound by actions."

कर्मे Noun
karme
कार्ये किंवा कर्मे
actions
लिंपती Verb
limpatī
बाधणे किंवा चिकटणे
to bind or smear
जाणती Verb
jāṇatī
ओळखतात किंवा समजतात
to know or realize
मातें Pronoun
mātēṃ
मला (परमात्म्याला)
to me (the Divine)
आपणियांतें Pronoun
āpaṇiyāntēṃ
स्वतःला
to oneself

💡 Meaning

Just as actions do not attach to Me, those who know Me as such are also not bound by their actions.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

Saint Dnyaneshwar elaborates that the Supreme Being is the non-doer despite being the cause of all actions. One who realizes this divine nature and understands that the true Self is distinct from the ego-driven actions of the body, becomes free from the cycle of cause and effect. Knowledge of the Divine's unattached nature serves as a template for the seeker to perform selfless action.

🎯 Practical Application

In professional life, practice 'detached involvement.' For example, lead a project with full dedication but do not let your self-worth depend solely on the outcome, thereby avoiding burnout and anxiety.

📌 Context

Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna how divine knowledge frees a person from the bondage of actions.

Dnyaneshwari Ch. 4, Verse 222

म्हणोनि कर्मे तरी कीजती। परि तीं कर्तेपणा न येती। जैसा सूर्य न शिवे दीप्ती। प्रकाशुनी॥

"Therefore, actions are indeed performed, but they do not bring the sense of doership; just as the sun does not touch the radiance it spreads."

म्हणोनि Conjunction

म्हणून
Therefore
कीजती Verb

कर्तेपणा Noun
Kartepana

Sense of doership
दीप्ती Noun
Deepti
प्रकाश / तेज
Radiance / Light
शिवे Verb
Shive
स्पर्श करणे / शिवणे
To touch / To affect

💡 Meaning

Therefore, actions are performed, but they do not result in a sense of doership. Just as the sun, while illuminating, is not touched by its own light.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

In this verse, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj elucidates the concept of 'Akarma' (inaction in action). Even though a wise person is engaged in various activities, they remain untouched by the ego of being the 'doer'. He uses the sublime metaphor of the sun: the sun illuminates the entire world, yet it remains detached from the activities it enables. Similarly, a person established in self-knowledge performs duties for the welfare of the world without the burden of ego or desire for results, ensuring that the actions do not bind their soul.

🎯 Practical Application

Perform your professional duties with excellence but without letting the success or failure feed your ego. For example, a doctor treats a patient as a duty, without claiming to be the ultimate 'giver of life', remaining detached like the sun.

📌 Context

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains how a realized soul performs actions without being bound by the ego of doership, using the analogy of the sun.

💡 Meaning

Therefore, Arjuna, cast away this delusive worry. Rise quickly, O son of Pandu, and take up your bow.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar captures the moment where Krishna transitions from philosophical discourse to a call for action. The word 'Zhakavili' suggests that Arjuna's anxiety was a form of mental deception or delusion caused by attachment. By asking him to 'take up the bow,' Krishna emphasizes that spiritual knowledge must lead to the courageous performance of one's worldly duties. It is a powerful reminder that wisdom should result in the removal of paralysis caused by overthinking.

🎯 Practical Application

This verse is applicable when one is stuck in 'analysis paralysis.' Instead of worrying about outcomes, one should focus on the immediate task. Example: A professional facing a difficult project should stop worrying about failure and start the first step of the execution.

📌 Context

After explaining the eternal nature of the soul, Krishna urges Arjuna to abandon his grief and perform his duty as a warrior.
