Karmākarma
कर्म आणि अकर्म
Action and inaction

💡 Meaning

Therefore, the true nature of action must be understood with great wisdom; for even those who are experts in discerning action and inaction have been deluded in this matter.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

In this verse, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj emphasizes the intricate and mysterious nature of 'Karma'. He suggests that the distinction between what constitutes a binding action and what constitutes a liberating non-action is so subtle that even the most learned scholars (Vicakshana) find themselves deluded. The path of action is not merely about physical movement but involves the intent and the ego behind it. To truly understand 'Karma', one must look beyond the surface and realize how an action can be performed without creating further bondage, which is the essence of spiritual wisdom.

🎯 Practical Application

In professional life, we often confuse 'being busy' with 'being productive' or 'doing right'. For example, a leader must discern if their decisions are driven by ego (Karma) or by the welfare of the organization (Akarma). Understanding this distinction helps in performing duties without stress or attachment.

📌 Context

Shri Jnaneshwar explains the complexity of understanding the true nature of action (Karma) and inaction (Akarma) as taught by Lord Krishna.

Dnyaneshwari Ch. 2, Verse 246

उपजे Verb

संगपण Noun
Sangapana

कामु Noun
Kamu

desire

💡 Meaning

Where there is contemplation of sense-objects, there attachment is born; from that attachment, know that desire arises.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar describes the psychological process of attachment. When a person constantly dwells on sensory objects (like wealth, fame, or physical pleasures), a psychological bond or attachment is formed. This attachment eventually turns into a strong desire (Kama). This is the first step in the ladder of spiritual downfall, as unfulfilled desires lead to anger and delusion. The teaching emphasizes that the root of all bondage lies in the initial thought process.

🎯 Practical Application

If you find yourself addicted to social media, it's because you are constantly thinking about it. To break the cycle, shift your focus to productive tasks and stop the initial contemplation of the app.

📌 Context

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains the psychological chain of how a person's downfall begins with the mere thought of sensory objects.

प्रमाण Noun

सामान्येंही Noun
Sāmānyē̃hī
सामान्य लोकांनी सुद्धा
Even by common people

💡 Meaning

Therefore, whatever a great person does, others also follow. Common people accept their actions as the standard or authority.

🔍 Deep Interpretation

In this verse, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj elaborates on the psychological truth that common people look up to leaders and realized souls for guidance. Whatever a 'Samartha' (a capable or great person) does, it becomes a benchmark for others. If a leader acts with integrity, the followers naturally emulate that behavior. This highlights the immense social responsibility of those in positions of power or knowledge, as their conduct defines the moral fabric of society.

🎯 Practical Application

In a workplace, if a manager stays late and works hard, the team is likely to follow that work ethic. Leaders must lead by example to inspire positive change.

📌 Context

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains how the actions of great men set a precedent for the rest of society.
