The Sage and the Mouse

🎓 intermediate ⏱️ 3 min read

Long ago, in a peaceful hermitage located on the banks of the sacred river Ganges, lived a great sage named Mahatapa. He was known for his kindness and spiritual powers. One day, while he was meditating near the river, a small mouse fell from the beak of a hawk flying overhead. The tiny creature was terrified and badly injured. Taking pity on the mouse, the sage picked it up, healed its wounds with his powers, and gave it shelter in his ashram.

Days passed peacefully until one afternoon, a cat started chasing the mouse. The mouse, trembling with fear, ran to the sage and cried, 'Master, please save me! This cat will kill me.' The sage, using his mystical powers, transformed the mouse into a cat. Now, the cat roamed the ashram fearlessly. However, a few days later, a large dog began to bark and chase the cat. The cat once again sought the sage's help. Seeing its plight, the sage turned the cat into a dog.

But the trouble didn't end there. One day, a tiger spotted the dog and looked at it as potential prey. The terrified dog rushed back to the sage. The sage thought, 'How long will this poor creature live in fear?' He used his spiritual energy and transformed the dog into a magnificent, powerful tiger. The tiger now roamed the forest freely, and all the other animals were terrified of him.

As time passed, the tiger became extremely arrogant. He continued to stay near the ashram. Whenever people visited the sage, they would remark, 'Look at the greatness of this sage! He turned a tiny mouse into this mighty tiger with his powers.' Hearing this repeatedly wounded the tiger's pride. He thought, 'As long as this sage is alive, people will keep reminding me of my humble beginnings as a mouse. No one will ever truly respect me as a king of the forest.' Blinded by ego and ingratitude, the tiger decided to kill the sage.

One day, just as the tiger was about to spring upon the sage, the sage sensed the tiger's evil intentions through his divine vision. He looked calmly at the beast and said, 'O ungrateful creature! I gave you life and strength, and now you seek to destroy me? Return to your original form! Punar Mushiko Bhava!' As soon as the words were spoken, the mighty tiger instantly shrank back into the tiny little mouse. The mouse realized its grave mistake, but it was too late. The sage drove him out of the ashram, and the mouse who once dreamed of being a king was once again hiding from cats and hawks.

💡 Moral

Ingratitude and arrogance lead to one's downfall.

📝 स्पष्टीकरण (Explanation)

This story highlights the theme of ingratitude and the consequences of ego. The sage helped the mouse out of compassion, elevating its status step by step. However, instead of being grateful, the mouse (as a tiger) became arrogant and tried to destroy the very source of its power. The moral is that one should never forget those who helped them during their difficult times, as arrogance leads to a certain downfall.
