In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar emphasizes that no living being can remain inactive even for a single moment. Nature itself, through its inherent qualities (Gunas), compels every individual to perform actions. Even physiological processes like breathing or mental processes like thinking are forms of action. Therefore, total inaction is an illusion, as the body and mind are constantly engaged in some form of activity driven by natural laws.

Understand that being 'idle' is also a state of mental action. Instead of fighting the urge to act, direct your energy toward productive and selfless work. Example: Instead of just sitting bored, use that time to help someone or learn a new hobby, acknowledging that the mind will always be doing something.

Saint Dnyaneshwar describes Arjuna's mental state in this verse. Just as the brilliant sun becomes invisible when thick clouds gather in the sky, Arjuna's valor and discernment are hidden under the clouds of delusion. Arjuna is inherently wise and brave, but his intellect has become clouded due to the attachment (moha) towards his kinsmen at the onset of war.

When we make wrong decisions by being overwhelmed by emotions in a difficult situation, we should reflect on this verse. For example, feeling despondent after failing an exam is like clouds of delusion covering our self-confidence.

Sanjaya describes Arjuna's state of mind to King Dhritarashtra at the beginning of the second chapter.

In this verse, Dnyaneshwar Maharaj clarifies the nature of 'Akarma' (inaction in action). A person who has realized the Self continues to perform worldly duties for the benefit of society. However, because their ego has dissolved into universal consciousness, the sense of 'I am doing this' (Kartrutva-bhav) never arises. He uses the analogy of the sun: the sun doesn't 'try' to remove darkness; its very nature is light. Similarly, the actions of a realized soul are spontaneous and natural, leaving no karmic residue because the individual ego is absent.

Perform your duties as a natural expression of your role rather than a means to feed your ego. For example, just as breathing is natural and we don't take pride in it, our service to others should be spontaneous and free from the expectation of praise or the burden of 'doing'.
