Just as a pure substance cannot be easily defiled, a mind enlightened by the realization of the Self remains detached from the results of actions. The sense of doership (Ahankara) is dissolved in the light of knowledge, making the individual free from the cycle of cause and effect. They act in the world, yet remain as untouched as a lotus leaf in water.

Perform your duties with a sense of detachment. For example, if a student studies for the sake of learning rather than just worrying about the rank, the stress of the result (karma) does not affect their mental peace.

Saint Dnyaneshwar describes the state of a liberated soul who remains untouched by the bonds of action due to the dawn of self-knowledge.

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar emphasizes that one should perform their prescribed duties (Swadharma) with excellence. The key to liberation from the cycle of karma is not the abandonment of action itself, but the abandonment of the desire for the fruits of those actions. When an individual acts without selfish motives, the action becomes pure and does not bind the soul. This is the essence of Nishkama Karma.
