Saint Dnyaneshwar describes Arjuna's mental state in this verse. Just as the brilliant sun becomes invisible when thick clouds gather in the sky, Arjuna's valor and discernment are hidden under the clouds of delusion. Arjuna is inherently wise and brave, but his intellect has become clouded due to the attachment (moha) towards his kinsmen at the onset of war.

When we make wrong decisions by being overwhelmed by emotions in a difficult situation, we should reflect on this verse. For example, feeling despondent after failing an exam is like clouds of delusion covering our self-confidence.

Sanjaya describes Arjuna's state of mind to King Dhritarashtra at the beginning of the second chapter.

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar identifies 'Dehabhimana' (identification with the physical body) as the primary 'Vyadhi' or disease of the soul. He explains that all worldly suffering stems from the false notion that we are merely our physical bodies. By calling it the 'root ailment,' he emphasizes that spiritual liberation is impossible without discarding this ego. He instructs Arjuna to abandon this illusion to realize the eternal Self.

In modern life, we often suffer from stress and anxiety because of our attachment to our physical identity, status, or appearance. Understanding that our true essence is beyond the body helps in maintaining mental peace. Example: Instead of being devastated by physical aging or loss of status, one should focus on inner growth and character.

Saint Dnyaneshwar explains the root cause of human suffering and urges Arjuna to transcend body-consciousness.

In this verse, Saint Dnyaneshwar uses the 'Reflection Analogy' (Bimba-Pratibimba Vada). Just as the single sun reflects in numerous pots of water, appearing as many suns, the singular Supreme Soul reflects in various physical bodies. The multiplicity is an illusion caused by the 'Upadhi' (limiting adjuncts) of the body and mind. Realizing this unity leads to liberation from the cycle of birth and death, as one understands that the core essence of all beings is the same.

Practice seeing the same divine spark in everyone you meet, regardless of their outward appearance or status. Example: Just as electricity is the same but powers different bulbs, the same life force is in everyone.
