The Sparrow and the Arrogant Elephant

🎓 intermediate ⏱️ 3 min read

In a vast forest, a pair of sparrows lived happily on a tall Tamala tree. They had built a beautiful nest, and the female sparrow had laid her eggs in it. Both were eagerly waiting for their offspring. One afternoon, a wild elephant, crazed by the heat and his own strength, came under the tree seeking shade. The elephant was extremely arrogant and cruel. In a fit of rage caused by the scorching sun, he began to violently shake the branches of the tree. Unfortunately, he broke the very branch where the sparrow's nest was located. The nest fell to the ground, and all the eggs were crushed. The sparrows survived by luck, but they were devastated by the loss of their unborn young. The female sparrow began to cry inconsolably. Hearing her cries, her friend, the Woodpecker, arrived. He comforted her and said, 'Crying will not help. We must teach that arrogant elephant a lesson.' The Woodpecker called another friend, a fly named Veena-vada. The fly suggested that they seek the help of a wise frog named Meghnad. They all went to the frog and explained their grievance. Meghnad devised a clever plan. He said, 'Intelligence is superior to brute force. If the four of us work together, the elephant's defeat is certain.' According to the plan, when the elephant rested in the afternoon, the fly would buzz melodiously in his ears. The elephant, mesmerized by the sound, would close his eyes. At that moment, the Woodpecker would peck and pierce both of the elephant's eyes with his sharp beak. Blinded and thirsty, the elephant would wander looking for water. Then, the frog would sit at the edge of a deep pit and croak loudly. The elephant would mistake the sound for a pond and fall into the pit. The next day, the plan was executed perfectly. The fly buzzed, the Woodpecker blinded the elephant, and the frog lured him toward the pit. The arrogant elephant fell into the deep trench and met his end. Thus, the tiny sparrow, with the help of her friends, defeated a giant elephant.
