The Jackal and the Camel

🎓 intermediate ⏱️ 2 min read

Once upon a time, a jackal and a camel lived on the banks of a wide river. They were good friends. The jackal was very cunning and sly, while the camel was simple and kind-hearted. One day, the jackal discovered a lush sugarcane field on the other side of the river. He craved the sweet sugarcane, but since the river was deep, he couldn't cross it alone. He came up with a plan and said to the camel, 'Friend, there is a magnificent sugarcane field across the river. If we go there, we can have a grand feast. You carry me on your back, and we can both enjoy the sugarcane.' The camel, who also loved sugarcane, agreed. He took the jackal on his back and swam across the river. Upon reaching the field, they both began to eat heartily. Since the jackal was small, his stomach filled up quickly. Once full, the jackal felt like playing a prank. He started howling loudly. The camel pleaded, 'Friend, please don't howl. The farmers will hear you and come here to beat us.' But the jackal didn't listen. He said, 'I can't help it, friend. It's my habit to sing after a meal.' The farmers heard the howling and rushed to the field with sticks. The jackal, being small and swift, hid in the bushes, but the poor camel was caught. The farmers beat the camel severely. After some time, when the farmers left, the jackal came out. The camel was in a lot of pain but said nothing. He allowed the jackal to climb onto his back to return home. When they reached the middle of the deep river, the camel began to take a dip in the water. The jackal cried out in fear, 'Oh friend, what are you doing? I will drown!' The camel replied calmly, 'I can't help it, friend. It's my habit to take a dip in the water after a meal and a beating.' The jackal fell into the water and struggled. He realized his mistake and felt deeply sorry for his actions.

💡 Moral

Tit for tat.

📝 स्पष्टीकरण (Explanation)

This story illustrates the concept of 'Tit for Tat'. The jackal was selfish and put his friend's life in danger just to satisfy his own whim, claiming it was his 'habit'. The camel decided to teach him a lesson by showing him that actions have consequences. True friendship requires mutual respect and consideration, not just using others for one's own benefit.
