The Clever Hare and the Elephant King

🎓 intermediate ⏱️ 3 min read

In a vast forest, there lived a large herd of elephants ruled by a mighty king named Gajaraj. One year, a severe drought hit the region. Rivers and ponds dried up, and the elephants were desperate for water. Gajaraj sent scouts in all directions, and eventually, one found a deep lake called 'Chandrasar' (The Lake of the Moon) that was still full of water. The elephants rushed towards the lake in joy. However, the shores of this lake were home to thousands of hares. As the heavy elephants stampeded towards the water, they accidentally crushed the hares' burrows, killing many and injuring others. The hares were terrified. Their leader called an emergency meeting. An old hare said, 'If the elephants return, our entire colony will be wiped out. We must find a way to stop them.' A clever hare named Lambakarna stepped forward and volunteered to deal with the situation. Lambakarna climbed a high hill near the path of the elephants. When Gajaraj approached, Lambakarna called out, 'O King of Elephants! Stop! I am a messenger from the mighty Moon God. He has sent me with a warning for you.' Gajaraj, being religious and superstitious, bowed and asked, 'What is the message?' Lambakarna replied, 'This lake belongs to the Moon. By trampling the hares, who are the Moon's children, and polluting his water, you have angered him. If you wish to survive, you must apologize to the Moon tonight and leave forever.' That night, it was a full moon. Lambakarna led Gajaraj to the lake and showed him the Moon's reflection in the still water. As Gajaraj lowered his trunk to pay respect, the water rippled, making the reflection shake. 'Look!' cried Lambakarna, 'The Moon God trembles with rage because of your presence! Leave at once before he destroys you!' Terrified, the elephant king apologized and led his herd away to another forest. The clever hare saved his community through wit alone.

💡 Moral

Intelligence is superior to physical strength.

📝 स्पष्टीकरण (Explanation)
