Habib Tanvir was a pioneer of modern Indian theatre, best known for his work with Chhattisgarhi tribal actors. He died on June 8, 2009.
He founded the 'Naya Theatre' company in 1959, which became a unique platform for merging folk traditions with contemporary theatre.
His masterpiece 'Charandas Chor' is considered a milestone in Indian theatre and was later adapted into a film by Shyam Benegal.
