It is thanks to his efforts that India has reached the Moon and sent its orbiter to Mars. Let's embark on the inspiring journey of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the architect of India's space program.
A Visionary Childhood and Academic Pursuits
Born on August 12, 1919, in Ahmedabad, Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai hailed from an illustrious and wealthy industrialist family. His father, Ambalal Sarabhai, was a successful industrialist, while his mother, Saraladevi Sarabhai, was renowned for her contributions to education and social work. From a young age, Vikram Sarabhai displayed an immense curiosity for science and a keen interest in learning new things. Their home was not merely a residence but a hub where great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore were frequent visitors. This environment instilled in him early on the values of serving the nation and social responsibility.
He completed his primary education in Ahmedabad before pursuing higher studies at Cambridge University, where he earned a Tripos degree in Natural Sciences in 1940. Due to World War II, he had to return to India. Upon his return, he began researching cosmic rays under the guidance of Nobel laureate Dr. C. V. Raman at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. This marked the true beginning of his scientific career. In 1945, he returned to Cambridge and completed his Ph.D. in 1947 on the topic 'Cosmic Ray Investigations in Tropical Latitudes'. His research was considered highly significant at the time and provided him with a deep understanding of space science.
Seeding India's Space Ambition: The Dawn of a New Era
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai clearly saw that science and technology were the true engines of India's development. For a newly independent India to stand tall on the global stage, he understood the power of science. In 1947, at the young age of 28, he founded the 'Physical Research Laboratory' (PRL) in Ahmedabad. This institution was the first step towards his space dreams. He initiated fundamental research in cosmic rays, upper atmospheric physics, and radio physics.
Dr. Sarabhai's vision was not limited to a research laboratory. He wanted to take India into space. He famously stated, “We have no intention of competing with the advanced nations in the exploration of the Moon or the planets or manned space-flight. But we are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the comity of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society.” It was this philosophy that laid the foundation for India's space program. He was convinced that for a developing country like India, satellite and rocket technology could be crucial for education, communication, weather forecasting, and natural resource management.
He played a pivotal role in establishing the 'Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station' (TERLS) in Thumba, Kerala. This location was ideal for rocket launches due to its proximity to the geomagnetic equator. In 1963, India successfully launched its first sounding rocket, a 'Nike-Apache', from Thumba. While the rocket was supplied by the USA, its integration and launch were carried out by Indian scientists. This was a historic moment in India's space journey.
The Birth of ISRO and India's First Steps in Space
Following the success at Thumba, Dr. Sarabhai decided to give India's space program a broader scope. For this, he needed a dedicated organization. In 1962, he established the 'Indian National Committee for Space Research' (INCOSPAR) and became its first chairman. This committee later transformed into the 'Indian Space Research Organisation' (ISRO) in 1969. The establishment of ISRO was the culmination of Dr. Sarabhai's vision and tireless efforts.
Through ISRO, Dr. Sarabhai undertook many ambitious projects. His primary focus was on the development of indigenous technology. He believed that India should build its own satellites and launch vehicles. Under his guidance, Indian scientists and engineers began to make progress in satellite technology and rocketry. He envisioned the potential of satellite communication and remote sensing, which could be utilized for the nation's development.
It was Dr. Sarabhai who conceived the idea of India's first satellite, 'Aryabhata'. Unfortunately, he passed away before 'Aryabhata' was launched in 1975, but his vision brought this project to fruition. The success of 'Aryabhata' secured India a significant place in the global space community. He also conceptualized the 'Satellite Instructional Television Experiment' (SITE) project, aimed at empowering people in rural areas through education and information. This project was successfully implemented in 1975-76, after his demise, bringing about a revolution in rural education.
Beyond the Stars: A Multifaceted Genius
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was not just a space scientist; he was a multifaceted personality. His capabilities were not limited to rockets and satellites. He founded or played a significant role in establishing numerous institutions that continue to contribute immensely to India's development today:
- Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad: Established in 1947, this institution remains a center for fundamental research in space and allied sciences.
- Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad: He played a major role in establishing this premier center for management education. He wanted to foster not just scientists, but also effective managers.
- Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA): He founded this institution to promote scientific research and development in the textile industry.
- Community Science Centre, Ahmedabad: He initiated this center to make science accessible to the common people, especially to cultivate an interest in science among children.
- Department of Atomic Energy (DAE): After the demise of Dr. Homi Bhabha, he took over as the Chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission and further propelled India's nuclear energy program.
- Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), Kalpakkam: His contributions were also instrumental in establishing this crucial center for India's indigenous nuclear energy program.
- Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL): Established to produce the necessary electronic equipment for atomic energy and space programs.
Dr. Sarabhai believed that institution building was not just about erecting structures, but about bringing together the right people, inspiring them, and creating the right environment for them to work. It is due to his farsightedness that India has become self-reliant in various sectors today.
The Enduring Legacy: Inspiring Generations
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai passed away on December 30, 1971, but his work and vision continue to guide India's space program. Today, ISRO has carved out a significant place for itself in the world. Through missions like Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-2, and Chandrayaan-3, India has successfully landed on the Moon. With the Mangalyaan mission, India astonished the world by sending its orbiter to Mars on its very first attempt. Through ambitious missions like Gaganyaan, India is preparing to send humans into space. Behind all these successes lies the foundation laid by Dr. Sarabhai.
He not only developed technology but also inspired thousands of young scientists and engineers. Great personalities like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam regarded Dr. Sarabhai as their guru. Sarabhai's life is a source of inspiration for all students. He demonstrated that with determination, hard work, and vision, nothing is impossible. In today's era, when science and technology are progressing rapidly, Dr. Sarabhai's ideas become even more relevant.
His work teaches us that science should be used not only for the nation's progress but also for the welfare of humanity. He always emphasized the use of space technology for peaceful purposes. This teaching of his remains a guiding principle for us even today.
