The Genesis of ISRO & First Steps
India's space program began in the 1960s with the establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969. The first Indian satellite, Aryabhata, was launched in 1975, marking the nation's entry into the space age.
Chandrayaan-1: Lunar Explorer
India launched its first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1. This orbiter successfully mapped the Moon's surface and famously detected evidence of water ice on the lunar poles, a discovery that reshaped our understanding of the Moon.
Mangalyaan (MOM): Mars Orbiter
ISRO achieved a remarkable feat by successfully placing the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), or Mangalyaan, into Mars' orbit on its very first attempt. This made India the fourth entity to reach Mars and the first Asian nation to do so.
Chandrayaan-2: Partial Success
Chandrayaan-2 aimed for a soft landing near the Moon's South Pole. While the orbiter segment successfully entered lunar orbit and continues to operate, the Vikram lander unfortunately experienced a hard landing, preventing the Pragyan rover from deploying.
Chandrayaan-3: Historic Soft Landing
Building on lessons from its predecessor, Chandrayaan-3 successfully achieved a soft landing on the Moon's South Pole. India became the fourth nation to achieve a soft lunar landing and the first to reach the uncharted South Pole region. The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover conducted crucial scientific experiments.
Gaganyaan & Beyond: Human Spaceflight
India's ambitious future plans include Gaganyaan, its first crewed mission, aiming to send astronauts into Earth orbit. Other missions like Shukrayaan (Venus orbiter) and continued lunar exploration demonstrate ISRO's commitment to pushing the boundaries of space research.
